“Fat to Fit” : My husband’s story in his own words
July 14, 2024
Yesterday my husband had a bit of an epiphany moment and he wanted me to share it. So I’ve let him take over my blog to tell his story.
Be warned, he doesn’t hold back.
This is a story that needs to be told. He’s my husband and was also my first client, back in 2020.
He has written this not as my husband but as my client.
I am equally proud of him as both, as well as relieved that he is no longer at so much risk of health problems.
Here goes… are you ready?
“I intend to just tell things straight.
Unlike the endless assortments of unhealthy food I used to shovel into my face, I won’t be sugarcoating anything.
I do freely use the “F” word. No, not THAT “F” word.
The other one, the worst of all the “F” words, the one that seems to drive the politically-correct body-positive types into a frenzy. The word is FAT. I used to be fat. A proper fat bastard.
My weight wasn’t the result of being “big boned” or having glandular problems or some other excuse-enabling medical anomaly. I was fat because I used to stuff my face with biscuits, beer, take aways, and basically anything I wanted to consume. I was like a pig anticipating a famine.
And worst of all, I didn’t particularly care. As long as my gluttonous little lizard brain was getting its food-fix then I didn’t care about the effects on my health.
At the foot of the White Cliffs of Dover, embedded in the small spread of rocks at Langdon Bay, there lies the ship wreck of the SS Falcon, now reduced to sea-bitten scraps of hull metal and ribs. It’s a fascinating relic to explore at low tide.
Back in 2018, we decided to visit this site. It’s a very long walk along the cliff top to the zig-zag slopes that meander down the face of the cliff to the Bay. The slopes are notoriously difficult to walk over, being perversely uneven, and an exhausting challenge in itself.
But all the effort is worth it, the reward is a fantastic monument to an authentic marine disaster. Of course, once you’re done, you have to scale back up that horrible slope and then walk all the way back to civilisation. It’s not for the faint hearted. And, I won’t lie, it was an experience that almost annihilated this fat bastard.
It’s fairly common for people to return from the wreck to the top of the cliff a little out of breath or wanting a little sit down. After all, it is a challenging venture. But less common is feeling like you might just die.
After that climb, I could hardly breathe, my heart was punching like a boxer’s training bag, and my limbs felt like useless appendages of dead blubber. I felt more wrecked than that dead ship below.
It was one of my first major eye-opening moments of self awareness about just what an awful fat lump I’d allowed myself to become.
No sugarcoating, remember? I’d done this to myself and it was all a choice, and here I now sat suffering the horrible consequences of those frankly atrocious choices.
Since working with Claire and Your One Life I’ve learned a lot about the human – food relationship. I know that this relationship can be complex, psychologically fraught, even toxic. Being stuck in a cycle of eating and feeling bad about eating makes the human – food relationship feel like an abusive relationship sometimes.
Claire has explained in fascinating textbook detail how our bodies are not naturally designed to diet, and that doing so places our lizard brains into a state of conflict, but also that there is a clear path to amending and healing our relationship with food, forever.
We just have to WANT it. It is all fascinating stuff, but applying it to real life is something else.
Naturally with Claire’s incredible guidance and expertise you do find a way to navigate this treacherous maze. You find something that I don’t believe any other paid service can ever give you. You find hope.
It’s easy to blame this or that on your weight, to live in glorious denial, and to avoid the changes you need to engage in order to fix things.
You can join the body positive mindset to fool yourself into feeling good about yourself, but that isn’t going to reduce your blood pressure or give you the energy you need to visit ship wrecks.
It can be broken down to a simple question: Do I wanna stay fat or not? Once you grab onto the simple truth that over eating and being fat doesn’t have to be your only option in life, then you can start solving it.
Not with stupid fad diets, trendy food packs, slavery to exercise, weird new injections, or surgery, but with some of the most mindful, effective coaching you’ll ever receive. Okay, reality-check, it’s not easy, nothing worthwhile ever is, but it works. It just works.
I cannot think of any three words in the language to better recommend Your One Life than “it just works”.
It’s now 2024 and yesterday, almost six years to the day, we decided to pay another visit to the fallen vessel that lay in its watery grave at the foot of the cliffs. Only this time, the arduous trek back up to the top felt what I would describe as “normal”.
Sure, I was a little out of breath and took a minute to recompose myself, but so do most people. It’s normal. I didn’t feel like I was at death’s door, like my chest was going to explode, or my blood circulation was burning rocket fuel.
It was another truly eye-opening moment of self awareness that revealed how far I’d come, how well I’d been fixed, and how much more healthy I was thanks to Your One Life.
It’s great when you can give a five-star review to a great coach for helping you lose weight, but it’s only when you really notice how profound the effects of her work are on your life that you wish you had the option to give a thousand stars.
Thank you Your One Life. Thank you Claire.”
