What to do When the Scales Throw a Curveball
August 16, 2024
The scales can be our best friend or our worst enemy when it comes to managing our weight.
For me they’re my best friend (these days) and studies show that weighing ourselves regularly is one of the biggest factors in successful weight management, and I am an example of living proof of this.
But it’s not always been like this. The only times I gained weight were when I didn’t weigh myself and buried my head in the sand. I was scared of them, scared of the judgement, the shame, the fact that they would show me what I didn’t want to know.
That I was eating more than I needed.
I would have to face the times I would emotionally eat, snack in the evenings, or serve myself huge portions, and see the true cost.
Once I realised the power the scales could give me to manage my weight in a healthy way, everything changed.
Most of my clients come to be with the same damaged, even toxic relationship with the scales that I used to have, and I work hard to help them turn this around, like I turned it around for myself.
The secret to success is developing the right attitude towards them, especially when they throw a curveball.
This week I had to go in to hospital for a procedure (and I’m fine, by the way)
I had to have a General Anaesthetic for my procedure, followed by a nice dose of IV morphine when I woke up.
And of course had to starve myself all day up to the time of the procedure (3.30pm), didn’t eat until 5pm and in the evening and even then it was light, easily digestible food, and not that much.
I had paracetamol with codeine before bed.
Then the day after, I weighed myself first thing (the only really accurate time to weigh), fully expecting to have dropped a little weight.
But I was up 1.2kg!
My first reaction when the scales throw a curveball like this is always going to be from the primitive part of my brain… like WTF??
But then it’s time to switch the rational brain on.
Was I worried? Not in the slightest. Here’s what I went through in my head…
“I didn’t overeat so it can’t possibly be fat.
I know I am likely to be carrying lots of extra fluid as my body has been through a trauma, and morphine and codeine cause slow digestive transit.
So the 1.2kg will only be water and food in my system and will all settle down in a couple of days as long as just carry on normally, and don’t let my primitive brain use it as an excuse to throw it’s toys around.
Which I won’t as I am well practiced at this now.”
That’s the key, keep practicing, challenging your primitive mindset which wants to keep you safe and comfortable in the here and now, and doesn’t care about your long term goals. Practice staying rational, and like anything else it will get easier over time.
But I won’t lie, it takes a lot of time… as we have to go through the lived experience of learning from every scenario that we face.
Think of it in terms of doing a full education,… primary school (learning the basics), secondary school (applying the basics to real life as you learn how to manage through life’s ups and downs) university, (more independent, high level capability) and post-graduate education (the rest of your life!)
But as long as you don’t give up and stop trying, it will come.
You’ve got this.
If you need help with managing your relationship with the scales, that’s exactly what I am brilliant at doing.
Transform your relationship with the scales and you’ll give yourself the power to transform your weight and your relationship with yourself too.
