I was really excited that this week Take a Break Magazine published my story of learning to ride a motorbike at age 50. It’s on pages 48 to 49 of issue 42. I was keen to tell my story because it had been an incredibly difficult challenge, especially at the beginning. I discovered that many other new riders, especially mid-life women like me, were struggling with the same issues I was. I wanted to show them that if I could do it, so could they. But what’s learning to ride a motorbike got to do with weight loss? There is no denying that life is so much easier when you have lost weight. It’s easier to move a lighter body. It’s easier to fit into and move about in clothes, including unforgiving motorbike leathers! But the biggest parallel for me is that learning to ride a motorbike and learning how to lose weight are very similar. You start off not really knowing what to do or how to do it, and it’s common to make mistakes. If we let those mistakes get the better of us, we give up and will never know what could have been. But if we push through and learn from those mistakes, and face our fears head on, it’s incredible what we can accomplish. I couldn’t even dare to pick my feet up off the floor on my first attempt of riding a motorbike, and fell off 3 times in that first session. Then fast-forward to last weekend. I did a tour of 836 miles in 5 days, to travel half way up the country do an introduction to advanced motorcycle riding day. Something I never dreamed I would be capable of doing just a year after I started. It’s the same with my weight loss. I stopped giving up on myself, and learned from my mistakes. And that led me to overcome a 25 year history of yo-yo dieting and I’ve been able to maintain a healthy weight for 13 years now. What about you?
